Cousland Courier
|
Since its first pages rolled off the printing press in 2013, The Cousland Courier has been the beating heart of village life in Cousland. Published five times a year, the newsletter reaches some 260 households across Cousland, nearby Carberry, and the smattering of farms and homes dotted about the surrounding countryside. Since 2023, The Cousland Courier – Our Community Newsletter – is run by a constituted group. They are a dedicated crew of four on the editorial team and eight distributors who pound the streets in all weathers – The Cousland Courier is a proper labour of love, keeping locals in the know and knitting the community closer together.

The Cousland Courier is the village’s trusty herald, dishing out the latest on upcoming events like the ever-popular Gala Day, where kids dress up and race and friends and neighbours enjoy the fun and games, or the cracking Hogmanay knees-up at the village hall, all aglow with festive cheer. It doesn’t stop at what’s coming up; each edition is chock-full of write-ups and photos from these events, capturing the grins, the games
and the general good craic as shared by those who were there. From a toddler’s triumph in the sack race to the annual toast to the New Year, these pages are a treasure trove of Cousland’s fondest moments.

More than just a news sheet, The Cousland Courier throws open its doors to the folk of the village, inviting them to pen articles, share titbits of interest, jot down dates for the diary or send in a photo that captures the essence of village life - be it a cracking sunset over the fields, a competitive game of Petanque or a quiet moment of neighbourly pride.
This open call ensures the newsletter is a proper patchwork of voices, reflecting the lives of young families, old hands, and everyone in between. We host an annual celebration for the team, in July at the Smiddy, and open it up to other villagers.

By landing on doorsteps from Cousland to Carberry, The Cousland Courier brings the village into every home, fostering a sense of belonging that’s as warm as a fireside chat. It’s a reminder of what makes this corner of Midlothian special—community, connection and a shared story told in every inky page. Long may it keep the village’s spirit alive and kicking.
